Zero Routine Flaring by 2030: endorser check

60 oil companies have endorsed the World Bank's Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative, launched in 2015. A straight line from their 2015 level to zero in 2030 puts them at 33% of it by 2025; we mark them on track at or below that. Indicative only: satellites see all flaring, not just routine flaring.

Satellites see all flaring, not only routine flaring.

No flaring attributed in the data (or below 0.005 bcm): Galp Energia, KazMunayGas, MOL Group, Niger Delta Petroleum Resources, Nile Petroleum, Pioneer Natural Resources, SNH (Cameroon), SNPC (Congo), Wintershall Dea. Flares inside Russia are out of scope.

Energy-to-Compute pioneers

Producers that have used gas at their sites to generate power on site for bitcoin mining or AI and HPC compute, from public announcements, filings and case studies. Each entry links to its source. Where the producer appears in the flare data, we show how its flaring in that country has changed since the project started: context, not proof that the project caused the change.

Method, sources and corrections

  • Flared volumes and operator attribution: World Bank GFMR, NOAA and the Payne Institute, flare volume estimates by individual flare location (satellite/VIIRS, 2026 release). Venting and flares too small to detect are not included. Operators below 0.005 bcm in a country are left out.
  • Attribution is the World Bank's, by flare site, and can lag acquisitions: Pioneer is now part of ExxonMobil, Hess of Chevron, Enerplus of Chord Energy and Civitas of SM Energy. Company names are shown as the data spells them.
  • Satellites measure all flaring, including safety and non-routine flaring, and the data has no production figures, so these are volumes, not flaring intensity.
  • Power: gas at 1,030 Btu/scf in reciprocating engines at 35% efficiency, averaged over the year, as in our gas-to-power calculator.
  • Russia, Iran, Venezuela and Syria are out of scope.
  • Spotted an error, or an Energy-to-Compute project we should list? Operators and partners can request a correction at contact@permianchain.com.
