Gas-to-Power Calculator

Convert a daily natural gas volume — flared, vented or otherwise stranded — into the average electric power it could generate on site.

About 1,030 for pipeline gas; rich associated gas is often higher.

Share of the year running; annual energy only.

Average electric output

4.40 MW

Fuel energy

1,030 MMBtu / day (1,087 GJ)

Annual generation

36,635 MWh / year

Heat rate ≈ 9,749 Btu/kWh. Enough to power roughly 2,414 H100-class GPUs at PUE 1.3.

Indicative estimate of average output, not an engineering design. Real output depends on gas composition, site conditions and equipment.

How it works

Electric output = daily gas volume × heating value × generator efficiency, averaged over 24 hours.

  • Units: 1 mcf = 1,000 standard cubic feet; 1 MMscf = 1,000,000; 1 e3m3 = 1,000 cubic metres (the unit used in Alberta reporting); 1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³.
  • Heating value is the higher heating value (HHV). About 1,030 Btu/scf is typical of pipeline-quality gas; rich associated gas is often higher.
  • Efficiency is electrical efficiency on an HHV basis. The presets are typical values: reciprocating engines about 35%, simple-cycle turbines about 30%, microturbines about 25%. Heat rate = 3,412 Btu/kWh ÷ efficiency.
  • Annual generation assumes the plant runs for the availability you enter.

Output is an average. Gas composition, conditioning, altitude, ambient temperature and equipment choice all change the real figure.

Frequently asked questions

How much power can 1 MMscf/d of gas generate?
At about 1,030 Btu/scf and 35% efficiency, 1 MMscf/d produces roughly 4.4 MW of average electric output — consistent with the common 4–5 MW rule of thumb.
What is e3m3/d?
Thousand cubic metres per day, the unit Alberta uses in production reporting. 10 e3m3/d is about 353 mcf/d, or roughly 1.55 MW with the default assumptions.
Can flared gas really run a data center?
Gas that is flared or vented can fuel on-site generators instead, and modular compute can be deployed beside them. Whether a site is suitable depends on volume stability, gas quality, access and connectivity.
Does this estimate revenue?
No. It is a technical conversion for early planning. Commercial value depends on the deployment model, offtake and costs, which we assess case by case.
